The employee of a security service saw a column of smoke during his patrol in Waltenschwil AG shortly before 4 a.m. and alerted the fire department, writes the Aargau cantonal police in a press release.
When police and firefighters arrived at the recycling company, they found a meter-high pile of electronic waste on fire, said police spokesman Bernhard Graser in an interview with regional broadcaster TeleM1. The fire was probably caused by lithium batteries.
The thick, black smoke, which could be seen and smelled throughout the area, posed no danger to the population or the environment, the police wrote. It took until shortly after 7.30 a.m. before the last embers could be extinguished. No one was injured.
