The emissions caused by tourist city tours in Baden AG will in future be offset by climate protection projects. For every person who takes part in a city tour, Tourismus-Region Baden AG will in future pay one franc for sustainability projects, as announced on Wednesday.

In total, the guided tours generate around 16.4 tons of CO2 per year, according to Tourismus-Region Baden AG (TRB AG). This figure was calculated by experts. Arrival and departure of the participants accounted for the largest share. Catering and give-aways are also included.

To offset the calculated emissions, TRB AG is involved in the forest climate protection project of the Lower Laufental and Dorneckberg forest districts. The project in the cantons of Baselland and Solothurn covers a total of 1800 hectares of public forest, whereby 94 hectares will not be used for timber for at least 50 years.

This will store CO2 in the long term and promote biodiversity. A further part of the money will flow into projects in the Baden region. The aim is to position the destination of Baden as a sustainable travel destination, according to Andrea Portmann, Managing Director of TRB AG.
