In more and more places in Switzerland, there are relatively few vacant apartments. What was previously mainly the case in cities and tourist regions can now be seen in more and more places. The federal government wants to continue to promote non-profit housing construction.

Between 2020 and 2025, the vacancy rate across Switzerland fell from 1.72% to 1%, as announced by the Federal Office for Housing on Thursday. This corresponds to a decrease of around 42 percent. A rapid change is not expected. Construction activity is still lagging behind demand.

The Federal Council initially proposed to Parliament in 2025 that the fund for non-profit housing construction be increased by CHF 150 million between 2030 and 2034. It grants loans for new builds, renovations and the purchase of properties.

The Federal Council also wants to continue the guarantee instrument for housing promotion. By guaranteeing bonds issued by the issuing agency for non-profit housing developers, the federal government can ensure lower rents.
