According to the agreement, imports of Russian gas via pipelines on the basis of long-term contracts are to be stopped completely by November 1, 2027 at the latest. Exceptions are planned for landlocked countries, which will be allowed to purchase natural gas from Russia for a further two months following the conclusion of short-term contracts. A ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) is to apply from January 2027 in line with the EU's 19th sanctions package.
According to an analysis by the EU Commission, a complete ban on Russian gas would not pose a risk to security of supply. There are enough other suppliers on the global market, according to Brussels. Consumers would therefore not have to worry too much about rising gas prices.
