Last week, several specimens of the Japanese beetle were discovered in the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Baselland.
Measures have now been taken against the invasive insect.
Among other things, some of FC Basel's training pitches have been closed and covered.
The cantons of Baselland and Basel-Stadt have introduced measures against the spread of the invasive Japanese beetle. This follows the discovery of several specimens in traps in Münchenstein and Basel last week, as the authorities announced on Thursday
Areas around the site in Münchenstein have already been milled and covered with plastic sheeting. This destroys the pupae of the beetles. In addition, any adult animals that fly out cannot crawl out and die as a result, according to a joint press release from both Basel.
A dense network of beetle traps will also be set up. There is also a ban on watering the entire infested area, as the larvae are dependent on a certain amount of soil moisture.
The Japanese beetles were found last week at the Merian Gardens near the border with the city and at Rankhof in Basel. The pest can cause considerable damage to plants both in the larval stage as a grub and as an adult beetle.
