The federal government does want to invest money in climate protection. But the state climate fund demanded by a popular initiative goes too far. Environment Minister Albert Rösti presented the "no" arguments for the vote on March 8 on Tuesday.

The federal government is already pursuing an effective and balanced climate policy, according to the voting brochure. It works not only with subsidies, but also with incentive taxes and targets. The federal government alone has around CHF 2.5 billion available each year for climate protection and the promotion of biodiversity.

The climate fund initiative of the SP and the Greens wants to oblige the federal government, cantons and municipalities to combat global warming and its effects. To this end, the federal government must create a state climate fund and pay in 0.5 to 1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) every year until 2050.

According to the Federal Council, these payments could lead to additional debt. There is also a risk that the money could be used to make uneconomical investments.
