Last year, there were fewer divorces in Thurgau compared to the overall population than at any time in at least 34 years. At the same time, according to the canton, the number of marriages also reached its lowest level for years. The average length of marriage in 2023 was 15 years.

1289 couples tied the knot in Thurgau in 2023, as the canton's statistics office recently reported. This is 85 couples fewer than in the previous year. 1234 marriages were between a man and a woman and 28 between same-sex couples. 27 couples had their registered partnership converted into a marriage.

The number of marriages was offset by 485 divorces, according to the statistics office. There were no divorces between same-sex couples in Thurgau.

Meanwhile, the average age of women and men who married a man or woman for the first time continued to rise. On average, women in Thurgau are 31 and men 33 years old when they get married for the first time. "At the beginning of the 1970s, women married on average 7 years earlier, men 6 years earlier," wrote the statistics office.

The majority of marriages between Swiss and Swiss nationals

In around every second marriage that took place, both people had a Swiss passport. In 34 percent of marriages, one person was a Swiss citizen and the other a foreign citizen. In 15 percent of marriages, both partners were foreign nationals.
