The canton, cooperatives and SBB laid the foundation stone for construction site 2 on the former Lysbüchel commercial site in Basel on Friday. Mixed-use buildings are to be built there for the new Volta Nord district.

SBB is constructing several residential and commercial buildings on an area of around 19,000 square meters. The focus is on housing, but the properties will also house offices, restaurants, services and family-friendly facilities, according to the SBB communiqué.

As the landowner, they have transferred part of the construction site to the WGN housing cooperative under building rights. Together with Wohngenossenschaft Jurablick, the latter is building non-profit housing and commercial space there. The buildings are due to be put into operation in 2026 and 2027 respectively, according to the statement.

Volta Nord is the first site that the canton is developing according to the sponge city principle, according to Building Director Esther Keller (GLP) in the press release. This means that rainwater will flow directly to trees instead of into the sewage system.

The development of the Volta-Nord site will extend the existing St. Johann district to the north. Up to 2,500 jobs, living space for up to 2,000 people and green spaces are to be created on the former industrial estate.

Last week, the Grand Council approved CHF 18.5 million for Saint-Louis-Park and Lysbüchelplatz, two green spaces for the new district. Construction is due to start next year.
