Health insurance premiums in the canton of Fribourg are once again rising at an above-average rate. The average monthly premium is now CHF 357.90, which is 6.9 percent more than in the current year.

Nevertheless, this is still one of the lowest premiums of all the Latin cantons, the Fribourg Department of Health and Social Affairs announced on Thursday. Only Valais has an average premium that is 90 centimes lower.

The renewed sharp increase after 2024 shows how difficult it is to manage this area with the current legal framework. There have been no noticeable results from the canton's efforts to contain costs.

The premiums, which have been rising for years, are a considerable burden on households and the canton. The system had reached its limits and the situation called for a fundamental reform.

"Against this backdrop, uniform financing of inpatient and outpatient services would be a major step forward," stated the canton of Fribourg. The Swiss electorate will decide on this in November.

In the canton of Fribourg, a quarter of the population benefits from a premium reduction. In the 2025 budget, CHF 226.3 million has been earmarked for this, almost twelve million more than in the current year.
