On Wednesday, the Grand Council of the canton of Fribourg approved a loan of CHF 56 million for a cantonal inter-institutional storage center (SIC) for cultural heritage in Givisiez. The storage facility will be operational after 2028.

The decree was approved with 95 votes in favor and 2 abstentions. The building will not only cover the needs of the cantonal and university library for the next 40 years, but also those of seven other state or state-affiliated institutions for 25 years.

Today, part of the material cultural heritage is "scattered and sometimes stored incorrectly", said Jean-François Steiert, the State Councillor responsible for infrastructure. This endangers valuable objects and makes maintenance expensive. "The situation is unsustainable in the long term," said Steiert.

In future, the collections will be brought together in one place at the SIC. Initially, around 6 million objects worth over 420 million francs will be stored in the warehouse.
