Yesterday, Friday, the A1 between Gossau and St.Gallen-Winkeln had to be closed due to an accident. Several road users misbehaved in the ensuing traffic jam.
Accident on the A1 between Gossau and St.Gallen-Winkeln: For as yet unexplained reasons, the 65-year-old driver of a truck skidded at around 3.40 p.m. and overturned to one side. The man was uninjured, but his load - window frames with glass - was broken.
The A1 had to be closed near Gossau in the direction of St.Gallen-Winkeln: The tailback stretched as far as Wil. "The patrols deployed therefore closed the highway in Gossau and traffic was diverted onto the rest of the road network," writes the St. Gallen cantonal police.
And further: "The closure was signaled with traffic cones and signs with a general driving ban for the section from Gossau." The patrol cars then caught five drivers who simply drove around the barrier. They were fined.
But that was not all: "Subsequent evaluations revealed that several dozen road users also drove around the barrier and joined the tail end of the traffic jam", according to the authorities.
They also observed a motorcyclist who "turned within the traffic jam and left the highway in Gossau against the direction of travel". A car driver had also acted negligently: The person reversed down the emergency lane to the Gossau exit. Another driver took the emergency lane in order to get further ahead.
In the latter case, the driver was reported to the police. This also applies to some road users in the opposite lane who took photos and videos. There were also several fines for those who failed to wear a seatbelt.
The cantonal police also wrote: "It was also noticeable that many road users left their vehicles in the traffic jam, entered the lane and moved or stayed in the emergency lane." When the traffic continued, they were not in their vehicles and prevented the traffic jam from breaking up.
