Boris Meier (GLP) has decided not to run in the second ballot for the office of mayor of Rapperswil-Jona. This decision followed the announcement by the previous mayor Martin Stöckling (FDP) that he would run again.

Another three-way candidacy with the same protagonists would be hopeless and would produce the same result as the first ballot, the Green Liberal Party of Rapperswil-Jona wrote in a press release on Friday. The incumbent mayor had previously announced that he would run again in the second ballot.

The GLP described Stöckling's decision as selfish, especially as their candidate did better than Stöckling in the first round of voting. They were firmly convinced that Boris Meier would have had a better chance in the duel against Barbara Dillier, the press release stated. The second round of voting for the presidency of Rapperswil-Jona will take place on November 24.

In the first round of voting on September 22, non-party member Barbara Dillier achieved the best result by far. The current mayor of Fischenthal (ZH) received 4,101 votes. The absolute majority was 4655 votes.

The second challenger, GLP councillor Boris Meier, did slightly better with 2583 votes than incumbent Martin Stöckling with 2534 votes.
