Simone Lustenberger (GLP) is to become President of the Basel Criminal Court with an 80% workload. Voters in the canton of Basel-Stadt elected the public prosecutor, who was born in 1980, to the post in the first round of voting on Sunday.

The joint candidate of the GLP and the middle-class parties LDP, FDP, Mitte, EVP and SVP received 14,310 votes. The independent candidate Daniel Bäumlin achieved 12,357 votes, as reported by the Basel State Chancellery. The absolute majority was 13,744 votes. The voter turnout was 26.5 percent.

The Grand Council had decided in April that the criminal court presidencies in the canton of Basel-Stadt would be increased by a total of 130 job percentages - by 80 and 50 job percentages respectively.

The criminal court is made up of twelve presiding judges and 30 judges. In court elections, there are usually only as many candidates as there are vacancies. The distribution of the presidencies is decided between the parties.
