River water quality Good marks for water quality in the rivers near Basel
The Cantonal Laboratory of Basel-Stadt has given the majority of water quality in the Rhine, Birs and Wiese rivers good marks. During the 2024 bathing season, the microbiological quality of 21 water samples was tested, as the laboratory announced on Monday.

On a scale from A to D, most of the samples tested were assigned to the top two quality classes A and B, it said. This was particularly true of the Rhine, while poorer values in categories C and D were also detected in the Birs and the Wiese. This mainly occurred in the rather rainy month of May.
When bathing at bathing sites with quality classes C and D, health risks from bathing water cannot be ruled out. According to the communiqué, people should therefore at least refrain from diving in such situations and shower thoroughly after bathing.
