The Grisons cantonal police have a new traffic base on the A13 highway right next to the Chur-Süd junction. The building, which cost almost 10 million francs, was officially opened on Wednesday.

The new building combines the existing Chur and Thusis traffic bases. After around one and a half years of construction, Cantonal Councillor Carmelia Maissen (center) officially handed over the keys to the new northern traffic base to Justice Director Peter Peyer (SP) on Wednesday morning, as the canton announced on Wednesday.

The ecological net-zero building will provide the police with a modern infrastructure. Its location directly next to the Chur Süd highway junction means short intervention times throughout the entire operational area. The 50 employees at the new base are mainly responsible for traffic police duties on the A13 between Maienfeld and San Vittore.

"The proximity to the A13 highway junction is one of the outstanding advantages," police commander Walter Schlegel is quoted as saying in the press release. In situations where every minute counts, quick access to the highway is of great value.

The new traffic base was launched as a pilot project as part of the canton's Green Deal climate action plan. According to the canton, it is one of the most sustainable buildings in Graubünden. The tower-like base stands out in particular due to its all-round photovoltaic strips, which also serve as sun protection. The Graubünden government calls it a flagship project for sustainable construction.
