The new Basel Director of Education Mustafa Atici (SP) wants to strengthen vocational training. The cantonal councillor, who was elected in April, said this to the media on Thursday after his first 100 days in office.

He had "intensive weeks" behind him, said Atici at the Basel General Vocational School. Since taking office at the beginning of May, he had studied vast amounts of files. However, as a long-standing education politician, he had not come across any surprises. His predecessor Conradin Cramer had handed over the department to him "well".

"I am grateful to be able to do this work," said Atici. Atici said that his first 100 days in office had been characterized by the three priorities "Equal opportunities for children and their families", "Equal opportunities thanks to inclusive schools" and "Equal opportunities thanks to vocational training".

"I want significantly more young people to complete vocational training". He also stands by the principle of "integration where possible, separation where necessary", said the Social Democrat on the occasion of the remedial classes initiative. The parliament's Education and Culture Committee announced at the end of June that it was rejecting the initiative and that the majority supported the government's counter-proposal. However, it supplements this with the possibility of creating remedial classes, but only in the case of learning difficulties and learning disorders. He is now looking forward to the discussions in the Grand Council, said Atici.

Election campaign again

Atici described the negotiations with the canton of Basel-Landschaft regarding the performance mandate for the university from 2026 as the most important dossier in the coming months and expressed confidence that a good negotiation result could be achieved.

The former National Councillor also emphasized in the presence of his office heads that he wanted to combat discrimination in schools, for example.

Atici was elected to the Basel government in April - and is already back in the election campaign. The general elections for the government and parliament in the canton of Basel-Stadt will take place on October 20.
