Industrielle Werke Basel (IWB) plans to replace all electrical systems in the Volta substation by 2029. One of the largest distribution grid switchgears in Switzerland is currently being replaced, as IWB announced on Thursday.

The new switchgear for the 145-kilovolt network will be 16 meters long. The switchgear for the 12-kilovolt grid will also be replaced in the course of the renovation work.

It will be around 60 meters long, making it the largest switchgear ever installed in a Swiss supply network, IWB writes. Two new transformers will also be installed and the three existing ones overhauled.

According to the press release, the Volta substation is the largest of IWB's seven substations and is almost 100 years old. Around a fifth of Basel's electricity flows through the substation every day - an average of 600,000 kilowatt hours.
