In December, the Green Liberals will run Katja Christ in the elections for the second Vice-Presidency of the National Council. The GLP parliamentary group nominated the Basel lawyer for this election on Tuesday.

If the 52-year-old is elected at the beginning of the winter session, she will be elected first Vice-President at the end of 2025 and President of the Grand Chamber in the 2027 election year at the end of 2026. She would be the first representative of the Green Liberals in the presidency of the Council. The nomination decision was unanimous, as the GLP announced on Wednesday.

Christ has been a member of the National Council since December 2019. She previously sat on the Grand Council of Basel-Stadt.

As can be seen in an information sheet from the parliamentary services on the National Council presidency, a new system for determining the presidency has been in place since the start of the current legislature. According to this document, it takes better account of the strength of the parliamentary groups and maintains a certain regularity.

The Green Liberal parliamentary group will take over the chairmanship for the first time in 2026/2027, according to the information sheet, which can be found on the parliament's website.
