The Lucerne cantonal government has approved the rezoning of the area near the Museum of Transport from a zone for public purposes to a special zone. It rejects the administrative appeal that is still pending.

The rezoning intended by the city of Lucerne is legal and appropriate, the Lucerne cantonal government announced on Wednesday.

Several residents had lodged an objection to the rezoning in spring 2023. The Lucerne City Council recommended that the Grand City Council reject most of these objections. It only wanted to accommodate the objectors in terms of the maximum façade height of necessary extensions and individual exhibition objects.

In May 2023, the Grand City Council approved a partial revision of the zoning plan and the building and zoning regulations. An administrative appeal was lodged against the decision.

The Museum of Transport Association is planning to build an accommodation facility with around 200 beds on the site. This required a special zone tailored to the location.
