Most pupils from elementary school or bridging courses in the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden have found a further apprenticeship position for after the summer vacations. Apprenticeships are particularly popular. However, both cantons also report many unfilled apprenticeship positions.

97.7 percent of pupils in St. Gallen who finish compulsory schooling this summer have found a follow-up solution, as reported by the Department of Education of the Canton of St. Gallen on Friday. The figure for bridging courses, which prepare students for basic vocational training after compulsory schooling, is 80.7 percent.

74 percent of young people in St. Gallen will start an apprenticeship after the summer vacations, the Department of Education also reported. Nine percent will attend a secondary school. Eleven percent opted for a state bridge course or a private solution. Around four percent of young people have not yet found a further apprenticeship.

In Appenzell Ausserrhoden, around 94% of young people already know what they want to do after compulsory schooling or the bridge course. This was announced by the Ausserrhoden Department of Education and Culture on Friday.

Over 1000 apprenticeship vacancies in St. Gallen

Of the 549 pupils who complete elementary school, the majority (344) start an apprenticeship. According to the Ausserrhoden Department of Education and Culture, 142 young people choose to go on to secondary school.

This means that around 88 percent of pupils made the direct transition from elementary school to vocational training or secondary school, according to the Ausserrhoden Department of Education and Culture. A bridging program will be attended by 32 pupils. 16 young people do not yet have a further training place.

There are still numerous unfilled apprenticeship positions in both cantons. In St. Gallen there are around 1500 and in Appenzell Ausserrhoden around 100, the cantons also reported.
