The defeated centrist candidate for the Federal Council, Markus Ritter, showed composure shortly after the election result was announced. "I'm happy for Martin." He had not known Pfister until a few weeks ago. Now he can say: "I've won a friend."

Ritter could not say much about the reasons for his defeat. "That's reading coffee grounds," said the St. Gallen National Councillor to the media on Wednesday in the Federal Palace in Bern. Party strategy goals were probably at the forefront.

"I would have loved to have done it, with my last ounce of strength," Ritter stated. Now it was time to pursue other goals. "I am still a National Councillor and President of the Farmers' Association."

He wished Pfister a "lucky hand in the many deals that await him", said Ritter. "And God's blessing."
