Martin Nufer is to become the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Luks Hospital Group. This was announced by the cantons of Lucerne and Nidwalden on Thursday.

Nufer succeeds Ulrich Fricker. The latter announced in May that he would remain in office until the end of 2024 at the latest.

The Lucerne and Nidwalden cantonal councils elected Nufer on the recommendation of the search committee. The 58-year-old is a trained internist and emergency doctor. He will take up his position on the Luks Board of Directors on October 1 before taking over as Chairman at the beginning of 2025.

Nufer has a strong track record in the Swiss hospital sector and is very familiar with healthcare, according to a media conference held by the two cantons in Lucerne.

Physician and manager

He understands both medical and business management issues very well, said Lucerne's Director of Health Michaela Tschuor (center) according to the press release. Nidwalden's Director of Health Peter Truttmann (GLP) noted that Nufer had already proven his expertise in setting up and managing regional care networks.

Since 2022, Nufer has been medical director at Klinik Adelheid, Rehazentrum Zentralschweiz, in Unterägeri. He will end this position, as well as his membership of the board of the industry association of Swiss rehabilitation clinics.

Nufer is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Lucerne retirement centers, Viva Luzern. He is also on the Board of Trustees of the Rast Foundation, a center for occupational assessment for people with brain injuries.

Nufer's successor was originally intended to be Lucerne FDP Councillor of States Damian Müller. Following public pressure due to the accumulation of offices and a possible conflict of interest, Müller relinquished the post. At the time, the SP, Greens and SVP had called on the Lucerne government to rescind the election of Damian Müller as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Search for CEO

As head of the Luks Group, the first task is to find a successor to CEO Benno Fuchs, Nufer told the media. Fuchs will retire at the end of March 2025.

Nufer sees a great opportunity in the further development of inpatient hospital care: "Sensibly integrated care within the region makes economic sense and increases the quality of service provision." Both are prerequisites for being able to continue to provide top medical services in the future.

The Luks Group includes the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital with its Lucerne, Sursee and Wolhusen sites, as well as the Nidwalden Hospital.
