The voters of Root and Honau LU have elected the municipal council that will lead the merged municipality from January 1, 2025. Four of the five people are from Root, one from Honau. All of them have previously served on the municipal executive.
The previous mayor of Root, Heinz Schumacher (FDP), was elected mayor by the voters. He received 1002 votes (absolute majority: 509) and was the only candidate.
The other candidates were also uncontested. Patrick Meier (center) heads the finance department, Stefan Hoffmann (center) the education department and Margrit Künzler-Niederberger (center) the social affairs and health department. They all live in Root. The previous Honau municipal councillor Samuel Wicki (non-party) will take over the Building and Infrastructure portfolio in the merged municipality.
Voter turnout was 28.5 percent.
The two municipalities decided to merge in March 2024. Honau, the smallest municipality in Lucerne, is only 1.25 square kilometers in size and has a population of 500. Root is significantly larger with an area of 8.65 square kilometers and 5,500 inhabitants.
