With 34 votes to 5 and one abstention, it said yes to a bill drafted by its Legal Affairs Committee (RK-S) on Thursday. Representatives of the center and SP did not want to support it, but were clearly defeated.
The canton of St. Gallen had provided the impetus for the bill and demanded that the 30-year statute of limitations for crimes with life sentences be abolished. The Legal Affairs Committee of the Council of States (RK-S) limited itself to murder in the bill. However, the proposal was rejected in the consultation process.
The Federal Council also expressed concerns, but wanted to take up the issue. Despite criticism, however, the committee stuck to its proposal by a narrow majority. Now the National Council has the floor.
