The National Council has approved a reform package presented by the Federal Council to strengthen rail freight transport. The multi-year package, costing several hundred million francs in total, is primarily intended to support single wagonload traffic.

Prior to the entry decision, the National Council rejected a referral motion by SVP Council members by 124 votes to 62 with two abstentions. At issue is a total revision of the Freight Transport Act and the associated federal decisions on financing.
According to the Federal Council, the transportation of goods by rail within Switzerland barely covers the costs today. The Federal Council therefore wants to use funds from the performance-related heavy vehicle charge to promote innovations in freight transport and thus make the railroads more efficient.
One example of such innovations is digital automatic coupling, which is to be promoted. The Council of States clearly approved the reform package last September.
