120 kilometers per hour on freeways, 80 kilometers per hour on roads outside built-up areas - these speed limits on Swiss roads should be maintained. The National Council committee responsible has rejected higher speeds of 130 and 100 km/h respectively.

The National Council's Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF-N) voted against a parliamentary initiative by Andreas Glarner (SVP/AG) by 13 votes to 11. The matter will next be dealt with by the National Council.
Glarner and a minority of the committee argue that the current speed limits were introduced as an emergency measure "at a time of great panic and under the impression of the alleged existential threat posed by forest dieback". Even today, low speed limits are wrongly justified on the grounds of pollutant emissions or safety.
The majority of the Commission argues that previous speed limits have proved their worth. Higher speeds would endanger road safety, especially outside built-up areas, and lead to more noise.
