The Juso initiative to tax million-dollar inheritances for the benefit of the climate has failed in the responsible National Council committee. A clear majority recommends rejecting the initiative and does not want to draw up a counter-proposal.

This was decided by the National Council's Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation (WAK-N) by 17 votes to 8, as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday. The Federal Council also recommends a no to the Juso initiative.
The arguments are the same: the initiative has "potentially massive negative consequences for the Swiss economy and public finances", wrote the National Council committee. From the point of view of the national government, the popular initiative could lead to lower revenues because most of the super-rich would leave Switzerland.
The popular initiative "For a social climate policy - fairly financed through taxation (Initiative for a future)" calls for a 50 percent tax on estates and gifts of more than CHF 50 million. This money should be invested in climate protection measures. This would also affect entrepreneurs.
