The three sign languages are to be legally recognized in Switzerland. The National Council committee responsible is calling for a separate law for this purpose. In doing so, it is taking a different path to the Federal Council.

The National Council's Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-N) submitted a parliamentary initiative on Friday that aims to achieve recognition of sign languages through the creation of a sign language framework law. This can be found on the parliament website.
The initiative will next be dealt with by the Council of States' sister committee. If it approves the creation of a special law, the WBK-N can begin drafting it. The Federal Council, on the other hand, envisages amendments to the Disability Equality Act.
At last year's Sign Language Day, interest groups complained that progress was only being made at a snail's pace. Overall, however, the equal rights and inclusion of deaf people in Switzerland are on the right track.
