In future, drivers should no longer have to carry a physical driver's license. This is the opinion of the relevant National Council committee. It advocates the digitalization of driver and vehicle licences.

The National Council's Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF-N) has passed a motion to this effect, as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday. The Federal Council can now comment on the proposal, after which it will be the turn of the upper chamber.

If Parliament approves the motion, the Federal Council must submit amendments to the law. Specifically, digital driver's licenses and vehicle registration documents should be recognized as equivalent electronic proof and be able to be presented digitally during checks.

The obligation to carry physical documents should be lifted accordingly. The physical "paper obligation" is an outdated concept, according to the written justification for the motion. This would also make checks more efficient. Digital ID cards could be linked to e-government services, which would considerably simplify processes for citizens and authorities.
