On Wednesday morning, the National Council began an urgent debate on the Federal Council's negotiations in the customs dispute with the USA. Five interpellations have been declared urgent and request information on various points.

Four of them were submitted by parliamentary groups, one by the leader of the Center Party, Yvonne Bürgin (ZH). Only the SVP parliamentary group, the parliamentary group of Economic Affairs Minister Guy Parmelin's party, has not submitted an interpellation.

In their motions, the interpellants demand information on various topics, such as how the federal government intends to reduce Switzerland's trade deficit with the USA, as claimed by the USA. Another question is whether arms imports should be part of the planned trade agreement.

In November, the Trump administration and Switzerland agreed on a declaration of intent, which resulted in the additional US tariffs on Swiss products being reduced to 15 percent. It is intended to form the basis for a trade agreement between the two countries.
