The National Council wants to extend the moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified organisms, which has been in place since 2005, until the end of 2030. It approved a corresponding bill on Thursday.

The large chamber reached its decision by 153 votes to 42 with one abstention. The Council of States must now deal with the matter.

The current moratorium will remain in place until the end of the current year. The bill was drafted by the National Council's Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-N) on the basis of a parliamentary initiative. It originally wanted the moratorium to be extended until the end of 2027, but the Federal Council argued for a longer period of five years, which the committee agreed to.

The aim of the extension is to gain time for the development of a new, risk-based regulation for the approval of plants bred using new technologies. The aim is to avoid a regulatory gap.
