"I am ready to take on responsibility for a strong center that builds bridges and holds our country together", Yvonne Bürgin was quoted as saying in a press release issued by Mitte Kanton Zürich on Thursday. She has been Vice President of Mitte Schweiz since 2021.

The 54-year-old was a member of the Zurich cantonal parliament until 2023. As President of the Cantonal Council in 2019/2020 and of the Mitte parliamentary group in the cantonal parliament, Bürgin was able to demonstrate her leadership qualities and her ability to form alliances, wrote Mitte Zürich.

She was elected to the National Council in 2023. She is currently a member of the Finance Committee. Bürgin is also the mayor of her home town of Rüti in the Zurich Oberland and works in her family's SME business.

Bürgin had already expressed her interest in the presidency of the parliamentary group in the spring when the party was looking for candidates for its presidency. At the time, the aim was to find a successor to party president Gerhard Pfister, who had resigned.

The Center Party needs a new president because the incumbent Philipp Matthias Bregy has been elected as the new Center Party president. Candidatures for the presidency of the parliamentary group can still be submitted until Friday (tomorrow).
