Swiss nationals continue to be discriminated against compared to EU/EFTA citizens living in Switzerland when it comes to family reunification from third countries. The National Council did not support a corresponding bill. The matter is therefore off the table.
The Council of States had already rejected the bill in the fall session. The National Council followed suit on Monday with 113 votes to 71. The conservative parties and the wafer-thin majority of the Political Institutions Committee (SPK-N) raised concerns about suspected uncontrolled immigration.
This means that Swiss citizens are still not allowed to bring the parents of a partner from a third country to live with them. This is also not possible for children over the age of 18 and time limits apply to younger children.
Only if these people have previously lived in an EU/EFTA country are they allowed to join them. These regulations do not apply to foreign nationals from EU or EFTA countries living in Switzerland.
