From December 2027, passengers will be able to travel from Basel to St. Gallen in 2 hours and 20 minutes without changing trains. The Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express (HBE) will lead to a significant reduction in travel time compared to the current connection, as announced by SBB Germany on Friday.

The route will run from Badischer Bahnhof in Basel via Waldshut, Schaffhausen, Singen and Constance to St. Gallen and Herisau. SBB Germany, a subsidiary of Swiss Federal Railways, will take over the operation, as the press release explains.

The HBE will run every two hours, and every hour during rush hours. It will run in addition to the existing Basel-Singen/Friedrichshafen IRE trains. This should optimize the service for commuters, according to SBB. The HBE will use the latest generation of Stadler Rail Flirt Evo rolling stock.

The new service will be jointly financed by the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the federal government, Baden-Württemberg and several districts. The expansion of the Hochrhein line is due to be completed by the end of 2027 and, in addition to electrification, will also include the renewal of platforms, bridges and tunnels as well as additional stops, according to the statement.
