The historic St. Jakob inn next to the football stadium of the same name is being put to interim use. The Christoph Merian Foundation has selected the Malian association to process "rescued food" there, as the foundation announced on Monday.

A new production facility for processing mainly "rescued food" is to be created in the building. It is also planned to open the St. Jakobs-Garten from September for event catering, for example at FC Basel home matches or on the match days of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 in the St. Jakob-Park stadium.

The Christoph Merian Foundation speaks of a "sensible use" for the former inn, which it has owned since 1836. The Malian association aims to integrate, promote and employ people with limited earning capacity in the primary labor market.

The pub was closed in March 2020 during the Covid lockdown. It was not reopened after that.
