The Nidwalden government has spoken out against the idea of a deputy solution for members of the cantonal council. It considers such a solution to be "critical" and "impractical".

In its response to a motion on Friday, the Nidwalden government wrote that it would be difficult for a substitute to gain routine in the event of sporadic absences by members of the cantonal council. This could be a disadvantage for those involved and for the running of the council.

It emphasized that deputies often do not have the same "familiarity" with parliamentary issues, which could have an impact on the quality of decisions. If the opposite were the case, members of the cantonal parliament could be persuaded to deputize more often.

Furthermore, cantonal legislation does not currently permit deputization. According to the government, the cantonal constitution would first have to be amended. Some cantons already have a deputy solution. Their election procedures are carried out in various ways. In the canton of Nidwalden, the electoral districts and thus the election procedure would have to be adapted accordingly.

The government recommended that the cantonal council reject the motion by Annette Blättler (GLP).
