The Nidwalden Hospital in Stans is to be expanded and renovated in three stages by 2030. A new outpatient center will be built, the existing hospital building will be renovated and the surgery and emergency center will be further developed.

This was announced by Spital Nidwalden Immobilien-Gesellschaft (SNIG) and Spital Nidwalden AG on Tuesday. The building application is planned for the end of 2025, by which time a cost estimate should also be available. According to the press release, the investments should cost significantly less than CHF 100 million.

The hospital had already announced in 2023 that it was planning a new medical center because the number of outpatient operations had increased significantly. It announced a competition for this, which was won by architects Giuliani Hönger in collaboration with Merz Kley Partner.

Interior design revised

These plans were revised. The concept of the new building attached to the existing hospital remains basically the same, according to the press release. However, the interior fittings will be revised.

The reason given for the revision was a new strategy for the hospital. In order to secure the future of the hospital, the outpatient, inpatient and therapeutic range of services is to be further developed, it said.

The results of the review set new priorities and resulted in a restructuring of the new and existing buildings, the press release stated. The focus will be on all outpatient areas of the hospital. The GP emergency practice in the hospital is also part of the new plans.

The former Nidwalden Cantonal Hospital has been part of the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital (Luks Group) since 2021. The hospital buildings belong to SNIG, which is owned by the canton of Nidwalden. SNIG will bear the costs of the construction project, according to the press release.
