The Nidwalden cantonal parliament wants to have a greater say in the strategies and concepts of the cantonal government. On Wednesday, it therefore created the instrument of the government council's planning report.

With this innovation, parliament can order a planning report on a specific topic from the cantonal government and then comment on it. The cantonal government can now also submit a planning report to the cantonal parliament on its own initiative.

Previously, the participation of the cantonal council was not regulated by procedural law. New processes should be seen as an opportunity, according to the District Council, which was initially critical of the request.

Remo Zberg (FDP) said that planning reports are an opportunity for the government to find solutions that can be approved by a majority. Parliament now has the opportunity to take corrective action, said Peter Waser (SVP). Elena Kaiser (Greens/SP) said that the new instrument was not a means of exerting pressure on the government, but could improve the flow of information.

There were no negative votes during the first reading. The vote will take place after the second reading.
