The first round of the cantonal council elections in the canton of Jura has ended without a definite candidate. None of the candidates achieved an absolute majority on Sunday. This will only be decided in the second round of voting on November 9, as announced by the State Chancellery.

The best result was achieved by incumbent Rosalie Beuret Siess (SP) with 11,435 votes. Government councillor Stéphane Theurillat (center) came second with 10,193 votes, followed by the non-party incumbent Martial Courtet with 7568 votes.
Courtet was not nominated by the centrist party and stood as an independent. The reason for this was an investigation report commissioned by himself, which criticized his management style.
In fourth and fifth place were the Social Democrats Raphaël Ciocchi with 7147 votes and Valentin Zuber with 7132 votes (both new). Fred-Henri Schnegg (SVP), also new, landed in sixth place with 5869 votes.
The future Jura town of Moutier voted for the first time on Sunday. The voter turnout was 41.5 percent. In its communiqué, the State Chancellery described the turnout as low. In the cantonal elections five years ago, the turnout was 47.5 percent.
The second round of voting will take place on November 9.
