Exactly one year before the opening match of the European Women's Football Championship in Switzerland, a countdown clock was set in motion in Basel on Tuesday and a specially decorated "Women's Euro" streetcar was christened. In addition, a "Soccer Court" on the Messeplatz invites visitors to play with the ball.

Basel's Director of Education, Mustafa Atici, was one of the sponsors who named the streetcar an ambassador for a sustainable Women's Euro. This refers to the fact that the tickets for the games include the streetcar rides and that Basel also sees the major event as promoting grassroots sport for girls and women.

Earlier, the tournament director Doris Keller and the overall project manager for the Basel venue, Sabine Horvath, had set one of the two countdown clocks in motion at the Kleinbasel head of the Mittlere Brücke and in the vicinity of the well-known sculpture "Helvetia auf Reisen" by Bettina Eichin.

At the European Championship, 16 teams will play 31 matches in eight cities. Basel will host five of them, including the opening match on July 2, 2025 and the final on July 27. Hosting the matches is worth CHF 12.9 million to the canton.
