Parliament does not want to make savings on regional public transport. On Thursday, the National Council followed the line of the Council of States.

Both chambers thus approved around 160 million more than requested by the Federal Council to cover the uncovered costs for the next three years. This means that CHF 3.524 billion will be available for the years 2026 to 2028.

The Grand Chamber reached its decision by 112 votes to 76 with four abstentions. It thus followed the proposal of the majority of its Transport Committee and resolved the final difference with the Council of States. The bill is now a done deal.

When the matter was first discussed last week, a narrow majority of the National Council had voted in favor of the lower amount of CHF 3.364 billion requested by the Federal Council. At that time, an alliance of the SVP, FDP and GLP narrowly prevailed against the center, the Greens and the SP, although there were differences within the parliamentary groups. On Tuesday, however, the Council of States insisted on its position.

A minority of the pre-advisory committee made up of the SVP and Lega wanted the National Council to stick to its original decision. However, they did not prevail. Ultimately, the decisive factor was that the Green Liberals joined the center and the left of the Council on Thursday.
