Local and regional radio and TV stations will receive a higher share of the licence fee pot in future. This has been decided by Parliament. The National Council approved a corresponding bill, which reintroduces parts of the media package that was rejected at the ballot box in 2022.

Specifically, private radio and television broadcasters are to receive 6 to 8 percent of the media fee revenue in future instead of the current 4 to 6 percent. This idea was newly launched by former member of the Council of States Philippe Bauer (FDP/NE) with a parliamentary initiative.

The bill also provides for additional funding for training and further education institutions for media professionals, for news agencies such as Keystone-SDA, for the operation of the Foundation for Usage Research (Mediapulse) and for self-regulatory organizations such as the Press Council. This request comes from Councillor of States Isabelle Chassot (center/FR).

On Tuesday, the upper chamber approved the two bills by a large majority in the overall vote. Only a few differences remain.
