The Basel-Stadt cantonal police are increasing their speed checks on the A2 highway bridge towards the German border and on Elisabethenstrasse. The reason for this is massive speeding on these two sections, as the police announced on Friday.

The traffic data survey on the A2 was carried out from the end of May to mid-June. Around 160,000 vehicles were recorded, 58 percent of which were speeding. The speed limit there is only 60 km/h, which heavy goods vehicles have to stop for customs clearance.

The fastest car recorded was even traveling at 136 km/h. This corresponds to a speeding offense. However, the side radar measuring system used in this survey does not generate any fines, as stated in the communiqué.

During the same period, a mobile radar system near Elisabethenkirche recorded around 109,000 vehicles in the 30 km/h zone. Here, 1147 administrative fines were issued.

In addition, ten drivers were reported to the police, four of whom will have their driver's license revoked, according to the police. The fastest vehicle was traveling at 66 km/h in Elisabethenstrasse.
