Now it's official: the bankruptcy of Totentanz GmbH in Basel was opened on July 5. The provisional bankruptcy notice for the organizers of the open-air spectacle "Totentanz zu Basel", which was cancelled at short notice, was published in the cantonal gazette on Wednesday.

The musical stage work by Swiss composer Frank Martin from 1943 for orchestra, ballet, boys' choir, baritone and Basel drums was to have taken place at the end of June. The plan would have been to perform the work again on Münsterplatz on the fiftieth anniversary of Martin's death, in a new production, as the organizers write on their website.

At the end of May, however, Totentanz GmbH announced that the major event could not take place. The reason given by the organizers was that not enough tickets had been sold.

Up to 2,500 spectators would have been able to attend the stage performance on each of the six evenings. Well-known names such as the choreographer and former Basel ballet director Richard Wherlock would have been involved in the open-air spectacle.
