The complete renovation of the Grabengut ice sports center in Thun will cost CHF 28.5 million. Following a recalculation of the costs, a supplementary credit of CHF 8.7 million is required, as announced by the City of Thun on Tuesday.

The city council will decide on this additional credit on August 22. If it approves it, construction work should begin in spring 2025, as the city of Thun wrote in a press release.

According to the city, the majority of the additional costs - 78% in total - are due to inflation, the higher reserve and prices that were estimated too low by the original cost planning team.

Should the city council reject the supplementary credit, the facility would be kept in operation as far as possible and the unsuitable components would be gradually dismantled. The artificial ice rink would become a simple recreational ice skating facility, as the report continued. "This would neither meet the needs of the population and ice sports nor the requirements of the city of Thun's building energy strategy."

After the construction costs for the renovation of the ice sports facilities in Grabengut were underestimated and a cost overrun became apparent, the municipal council halted the project at the beginning of 2023. The cost estimate was then reviewed externally and the mandate for cost planning was reassigned within the general planning team.

Thun voters clearly approved the renovation in February 2022.
