The political right is of the opinion that the government's draft on combating over-indebtedness penalizes creditors too much. Over-indebted people should be supported, but not at any price.

In the view of the Federal Council, over-indebted people should have the opportunity to wipe the slate clean by filing for bankruptcy. Their debts should be written off after a period of three years. The condition is that they make do with the minimum subsistence level and pay the rest of their income to the creditors.

Such a system would be too disadvantageous for creditors as they would not be sufficiently compensated, according to the civil side. "If you extend the deadline to five years, you can hope to bring 20,000 francs more into the coffers," Philippe Nantermod (FDP/VS) told Keystone-SDA.

In the view of the political left, however, changing this deadline would send out the wrong signal.
