The Seealpsee ecosystem is to be better protected. The analysis of sediment samples from the bottom of the mountain lake will provide clues. The Innerrhoden Office for the Environment is working together with the Rheintal Diving Friends for the investigation.

The results of the investigation will enable a better understanding of the effects of environmental changes on the Seealpsee and informed decisions on protective measures to be made, according to a press release issued by the Council Chancellery on Tuesday.

To this end, it is necessary to dive for sediment samples in Seealpsee. These would then be tested for their quality. The Oekotoxzentrum, the Swiss Center for Applied Ecotoxicology, is responsible for this. The results are expected to be published at the end of the year.

The depth of the lake is up to 15 meters and the divers will take samples at three different points, explained Heike Summer, Head of the Office for the Environment, when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. The Seealpsee is the most frequently used lake in Appenzell Innerrhoden. It also feeds the most important drinking water supply in the canton.
