There is a need for improvement in the planning, management and supervision of major rail infrastructure projects. This is the conclusion of the parliamentary supervisory committee. It is demanding improvements from the Federal Council.

Although the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) is responsible for managing and supervising the projects efficiently on the whole, the Control Committee of the Council of States (CPC-S) writes in a report published on Tuesday. However, the Confederation must make a clearer distinction between its supervisory and management tasks in future.

"The close organizational proximity between the responsible sections of the Federal Office poses a risk to independent decision-making," it says. The Federal Office and the railroad companies systematically understate costs and set deadlines that are too short.

In recent years, there have been considerable additional costs and delays in several stages of railroad expansion. According to the GPK-S, the Federal Council has already considered measures to improve planning.
