Despite a shortage of teaching staff, there will be "no empty classrooms" in the canton of Lucerne at the start of the 2024/25 school year. Director of Education Armin Hartmann (SVP) told the media on Wednesday. There is a teacher for all schoolchildren.

However, the cantonal councillor also said that "creative solutions" had been necessary in some cases. Overall, he described the situation on the teacher market as unchanged compared to the previous year.
According to Hartmann, it is most difficult for the municipalities close to the cantons of Aargau and Zug. As a countermeasure, however, it is not enough to simply increase salaries, explained the Director of Education. This would be too expensive for the canton anyway.
The Lucerne cantonal government presented measures to combat the teacher shortage in March. It is not just focusing on wages. Rather, the aim is to make the profession more attractive overall, for example by creating career opportunities.
Pupils with difficult behavior are a challenge for teaching staff. There is a large increase in these children, said Hartmann. However, there is no return to small classes.
Hartmann described so-called school islands, which some municipalities have already introduced, as a more suitable solution. In such a school island, a child with challenging behavior can take time out.
