A new beach volleyball center is to be built in the Weyermannshaus area. On Thursday, Bern's city parliament agreed to the city handing over a plot of land for 60 years on a building lease.

The city council clearly approved the city government's proposal with 64 votes in favor and one abstention. The City of Bern will therefore cede a plot of land to the Beachvolley Bern association for the construction of the new beach center in Ausserholligen.

The City Council also approved two commitment credits amounting to around CHF 5.84 million for the new "Home of Beach" as part of the proposal. CHF 5.14 million is earmarked for the financing of an underground, two-storey parking garage with 84 parking spaces, which is integrated into the project. The parking garage will also be available to visitors to the Weyerli. In return for the right to use the parking garage, the city will reimburse the association for the construction costs.

A further 700,000 francs will be used to build a new skate park. The site on which the new beach volleyball facility is being built is currently home to the city's largest and most frequented skate park. In order to relocate this to the Europaplatz Süd site in a first phase, terracing and new skate elements are required.

Training center for the national beach volleyball teams

The "Home of Beach" will house the national center for beach volleyball and thus the training center for the internationally successful Swiss national beach volleyball teams. However, it will also be available for use by schools. A total of four indoor courts and five outdoor courts are planned. Four of the outdoor courts will be on the roof of the new building. This will also house changing rooms and catering facilities. The approval process is currently underway.

The Beachvolley Bern club has over 400 active members from popular and competitive sports, including many children and young people.

The Weyermannshaus site, where the new beach center is to be built, is located in the Ausserholligen development focus area. Various construction and urban development projects will be realized there over the next few years.

The current beach center is located on the Goumoënsmatte in the Weissenbühl district. A new school building is planned there. The original plan was to combine the beach center with the school use. However, there was opposition to this from politicians and residents, which is why the municipal council looked for alternatives.
